Jong-Seok Park

During my childhood, I spent much time catching bugs such as grasshoppers, cicadas and stag beetles and raising them. At that time, I didn't know the hobby would be my future job, but I had aspirations toward fieldwork. Finally, I enrolled into the Department of Biology, Chungnam National University (Daejeon, Korea) and had the good fortune to meet Dr. Kee-Jeong Ahn, who is working on insect taxonomy and systematics. My goal of life, a beetle taxonomist, has not changed since I met him. I worked on beetle taxonomy in Dr. Ahn's lab for 5 years and obtained a masters degree. Of course, I have learned much in the lab there, but I was also eager to learn in other environments. I began my Ph.D. study during fall 2007 in Dr. Carlton's lab.

I am broadly interested in beetle taxonomy and systematics, but I am focusing on the subfamilies Aleocharinae and Pselaphinae (Staphylinidae), both poorly known animal groups with many taxonomic challenges. I am presently preparing to revise the supertribe Faronitae, a basal group of the Pselaphinae, as my dissertation research.
