CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECTS

Great Smoky Mountains National Park All-Taxa Biodiversity Inventory. 2001-07. I’m part       of the Louisiana State Arthropod Museum (LSAM) team lead by C.E. Carlton, responsible for the beetle inventory. My participation has an emphasis on collection of forest litter fauna, identification and species web pages preparation of several beetle    families, and molecular phylogenetic study of primarily S Appalachian carabid genus Anillinus. See details at: http://entomology.lsu.edu/lsam/smokybeetles.htm

IBISCA - Panamá 2003-04 (Investigating the Biodiversity of Soil and Canopy Arthropods).      I’m part of an international research team of this Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute-led project with responsibilities in fieldwork (pitfall and flight intercept trapping, 2003-04) and sorting/analytical (4 target beetle families, 2004-07) stages of the project. See details at: http://www.naturalsciences.be/cb/ants/projects/ibisca_main.htm

IBISCA - SANTO 2006-08. I’m a part of the ‘terrestrial theme’ team of the international project SANTO 2006, a biodiversity survey of the fauna of Espiritu Santo Island in Vanuatu. The             arthropod group of the team will employ approaches and methods of the IBISCA Project to study and survey insect diversity and distribution on an altitudinal transect in the island. My responsibilities will include primarily flight intercept trapping and forest litter sifting and subsequent beetle sorting, identification and data analysis. See details at: http://www.ird.fr/recherche/santo2006/english/index.htm

Survey of Pocket Gopher Burrow Beetle Fauna in Louisiana. 2000-05. I coordinated this LSAM inventory conducted in several localities within Geomys breviceps range in Louisiana. At present all the material is identified, and a paper with the survey results will be ready for submission in spring of 2007.

Comparative Studies of Local Histerid Faunas in the Neotropics. 2004-08. This project targets the study of local faunas of Histeridae across the Neotropics. Data for four sites well-sampled for the whole family (LaSelva and Las Cruces, Costa Rica, San Lorenzo, Panamá, and Yasuní, Ecuador) and for ca. 15 sites with representative sampling of inquilinous subfamily Hetaeriinae are being collected and compiled.

Histeridae and Alticini in Canopies of Neotropical Rainforests. 2005-2008. Using extensive canopy collections by IBISCA team (see above) and Smithsonian Institution group lead by T.L. Erwin in collaboration with A.S.Konstantinov (USDA Systematic Entomology Lab), I will conduct a comparative study of diversity and natural history of target taxa communities at 3 sites in lowland Panamá and Ecuador. Currently, material is various     stages of processing, identification and databasing.
