The Scolytinae is a species rich subfamily of weevils that generally attack dead or dying trees. Bark and Ambrosia beetles are important members of forested ecosystems throughout the world and their actions can cause significant damage to economically important woody plants. A famous example is Scolytus multistriatus (Marsham), which inoculated Elm trees with Ceratocystis ulmi, the causative agent of Dutch Elm Disease.

At present, 52 species of Scolytinae are known to occur in Louisiana, only a few of which are economically important. However, accurate identification is necessary if meaningful action is to be taken in the event of an infestation.

An interactive, web based identification system using Lucid software has been created to aid in the identification of the Scolytinae of Louisiana. The key incorporates more than 120 characters that can be used to separate taxa, as well as dorsal and lateral photographs of each species for comparative matching.

This key incorporates only those species of Scolytinae currently known to be in Louisiana. Additional species and species likely to be found in Louisiana may be added at a later date.
