Psilopyga nigripennis LeConte (Nitidulidae), a stink horn fungus beetle
Great
Smoky Mountain Beetle Project Cooperator Network
The Coleoptera Taxonomic Working
Group (TWIG)
Chris
Carlton, TWIG Coordinator
The list below gives names, contact
information, and general statements of taxonomic interests of individuals
involved in the Coleoptera Twig for the GSMNP ATBI. Anyone not currently listed
who is interested in getting involved in the project should contact the
Coleoptera twig coordinator, Chris Carlton.
The final disposition of data and specimens is as follows: the majority of specimens may be deposited in any publicly accessible institutional collection, but all data must integrated with the GSMNP database managed by Charles Parker and Michael Kunze (michael_kunze@nps.gov). These data may be sent directly or they may be incorporated into the LSAM's Biota system for periodic transfer to GSMNP. Exemplars of all identified taxa must be returned to the collection at GSMNP. Appropriate stewardship and accessibility is expected. Privately based collections that house specimens from this project must have an arrangement with a public institution where specimens will eventually be deposited
Tracking progress: The LSAM is maintaining a simplified species database posted on this website to
allow continual tracking of beetle species recorded from GSMNP. If you are
identifying beetles for the ATBI, please check your determinations against this
list and provide us with the names of any new taxa that should be added. Also,
curators and directors of entomological collections, if you have historical
holdings of specimens collected in the park, we would appreciate information
about those holdings, especially for species that are not currently listed. If
you have large numbers of GSMNP specimens scattered throughout your collection,
please let us know and we will try to arrange a visit to record those data.
Research opportunities: Discover Life in America provides research funding
through its minigrants program to scientists working on various aspects of the
ATBI. If you are interested in applying for a DLIA minigrant, contact grants
coordinator John Morse for information
about program announcements and proposal guidelines. For coleopterists applying
for research grants please contact Chris Carlton for information about how your
research project can help the Coleoptera Twig achieve its long term objective
of providing a complete inventory of beetles living in the park.
